Freedom Bakery makes bread. As simple as that. Prisoners currently serving time can access baking courses and contribute to Freedom Bakery whilst in prison. On release, they can then continue employment with the bakery until ready to undertake new working positions within society. The bread baked at Freedom Bakery is sold back to prisons (at a greatly reduced price) but also sold to the general public with all profits returning to the bakery to ensure its survival. The Bakery currently employs 13 full time employees (all ex prisoners), and are joined through the week by trainees from HMP Barlinnie. Freedom Bakery is a social enterprise as well as a social experiment.
